前美军广泛列装的现役迷彩战斗服(U.S.BATTLEDRESSUNIFORM——海外简称U.S.BDU，国内泛称为作训服)主要有丛林迷彩战斗服、六色沙漠迷彩战斗服和三色沙漠迷彩战斗服。美国军用三色迷彩战斗服均采用100%纯棉重磅防刮布料（RIPSTOP）制造。所谓防刮布料,是在布的纺织过程中加入成经纬状分布的“筋络”,这样制成的衣服一旦在使用中被锋利的物体勾刮,所造成的三角口可以控制在最小。因为军用作战服采用的是重磅布料，军服质量远远重于同体积的普通服装，同时，军版战斗服即使经常洗涤也不会褪色，但是首次洗涤时军服会有极轻微的缩水；其次，军用三色沙漠迷彩战斗服的上装和下装均有大小2个标签，上装的小标签位于上装的衣领处，主要是标明服装尺寸，通过插图可见在上装小标签的右上角还有一个军方的黑色油印号码11。上装大标签在右侧大口袋反面位置，标签前2行英文表明作战服的种类和尺寸，第4行为生产合同号（CONTRACTNO.9027-91），其中数字一栏中的91代表合同到期日为1991年，即可知道该件战斗服的制造时间是在1991年之前；第5行为布料成份（100%COTTON），第6行为制造厂商，大标签分割线以下的1～6条为洗涤和保管注意事项，最后是一句警告：“请不要拿掉此标签”。美军三色沙漠迷彩的下装也有大小2个标签，其形式与上装基本相同。
